Perovskite photovoltaics is an exciting new technology that promises to be a game-changer for the solar industry. Perovskite based solar cells are simple to produce, yet demonstrate high conversion efficiency as well as a tuneable bandgap, opening up many potential applications.
A perovskite solar cell contains a film with a perovskite crystal structure that absorbs the sunlight and converts the sun’s photons into free carriers (electrons and holes). Many of these perovskite materials are cheap to produce, and have demonstrated highly suitable properties for solar cells, including a high defect tolerance, excellent absorption in even very thin films, and long transport distances for electrons and holes. Perovskite solar cells have already demonstrated more than 23% efficiency on small areas, and several companies are gearing up to commercialise perovskite photovoltaic technology.
